Germany's Race for Debt Brake Reform, US Shutdown Concerns | The Opening Trade 03/14

Global stocks rose on Friday as the threat of a US government shutdown receded and expectations grew that China will unveil measures to boost consumer demand. The Eurostoxx 600 climbed while the British Pound weakened after data showed the UK economy unexpectedly shrank at the start of 2025. German conservative party leader Friedrich Merz, who aims to succeed Chancellor Olaf Scholz in the coming weeks, acknowledged that parallel talks with the Germany's Green party to secure the defense and infrastructure spending package. German parties are rushing to secure a supermajority in parliament to approve sweeping constitutional amendments that would release defense spending from debt restrictions and set up a $542 billion fund.
