The word "barrio" means "neighborhood" in Spanish, and in most Spanish-speaking places, that's exactly what it signifies. In the Dominican Republic, a barrio typically refers to a poorer district of the city, where low and middle-class citizens reside.

A Dominican barrio is a vibrant community with a life of its own. It features ample grocery stores/colmados, small businesses, schools, churches, playgrounds, baseball fields, and even small public parks. Dominicans enjoy their day-to-day life, which is livened up by party vibes and loud music on weekends. Generally, things are more affordable here compared to downtown and tourist areas. The barrio has its unique flavor of Dominican culture and also attracts certain expats who choose to live there for various reasons.
