John Eccles, Semele - first part/prima parte - Live in Milan, October 2024

Semele non è solo un oratorio di Handel ma è anche una rarissima opera di John Eccles.
Una musica assolutamente inglese eseguita da un cast e da un’orchestra internazionale.
Un’opera che, per una serie di sfortunate coincidenze, non venne mai rappresentata nella Londra settecentesca, ha preso vita a Milano come tappa finale di un progetto visionario che ha potuto realizzarsi.
I musicisti che la eseguono provengono infatti da realtà eterogenee e da continenti lontani: nel corso del 2024 si sono conosciuti e hanno collaborato in Francia, Polonia, Singapore, Cina e Taiwan. In questo concerto li ritroviamo tutti in una vera festa della musica!

It features distinctly English music performed by an international cast and orchestra.
An opera that, due to a series of unfortunate coincidences, was never staged in 18th-century London, but came to life in Milan as the final chapter of a dream come true.
The musicians you will hear come from diverse backgrounds and distant continents. Throughout 2024, they met and collaborated in France, Poland, Singapore, China, and Taiwan. In this concert they reunite in a true celebration of music!

PRIMO ATTO
Semele è innamorata di Giove, ma è costretta a sposare Athamas. Durante la cerimonia, un tuono spegne la fiamma sacrificale dedicata a Giunone, e i sacerdoti interrompono il rito. Semele viene rapita da un'aquila, identificata come Giove. Ino confessa il suo amore per Athamas, mentre tutti celebrano la felicità di Semele in cielo.

SECONDO ATTO
Furiosa, Giunone ordina a Iris di scoprire dove si trovano Giove e Semele, il cui palazzo è protetto da draghi. Intanto, Giove e Semele cantano il loro amore, ma Semele si tormenta per la sua mortalità. Giove, per distrarla, organizza un incontro con sua sorella Ino e un intrattenimento.

TERZO ATTO
Giunone chiede a Somnus, il Dio del Sonno, la sua bacchetta magica e addormenta Ino per travestirsi da lei. Ingannando Semele, la convince a chiedere a Giove di mostrarsi in forma divina per ottenere l'immortalità. Nonostante gli avvertimenti di Giove, Semele insiste e viene distrutta dal suo fulgore divino. Athamas sposa Ino, e Apollo che profetizza che Bacco, il figlio non ancora nato di Giove e Semele, sorgerà dalle sue ceneri e, grazie all’invenzione del vino, libererà i mortali dalle pene d’amore.

ACT I
Semele is about to be married against her will to Prince Athamus, though she loves the god Jupiter. Jupiter's thunder interrupts the ceremony, and Athamus finds himself left alone with Ino, Semele's sister. Ino is professing her love for Athamus when Cadmus enters to announce that Semele has been carried off to heaven by Jupiter in the form of an eagle.

ACT 2
Juno, jealous wife of Jupiter, has instructed her handmaid Iris to find out where Semele and her husband are. Iris says that they are in his palace, guarded by dragons. Within the palace, Jupiter and Semele sing of their mutual love but Semele is not satisfied, realising that as a mortal her happiness must be transitory. Jupiter attempts to divert her from such thoughts, and to provide entertainment arranges for Ino to visit her.

ACT 3
Juno, accompanied by Iris, visit the god Somnus and asks to borrow his magic rod to charm the dragons. She gets Somnus to put Ino to sleep so that she can take her place. Disguised as Ino, Juno falsely tells Semele that she has the opportunity to become immortal if only she can persuade Jupiter to appear before her as he truly is, in his natural godly state. When Semele and Jupiter are alone, Semele first secures from him a vow that he will do whatever she asks, and then she demands that he appear as a god. Jupiter warns her of her folly but is unable to persuade her to change her mind. He carries out the vow, appearing with his most gentle fire and lightning, but is unable to save her from being destroyed. In the final scene, Ino marries Athamus and Apollo prophesies that Bacchus, the unborn child of Jupiter and Semele, will rise from Semele's ashes.
