The $1,000 CNC Project - LED Engraved Ultrasound [ULTIMATE Baby Shower Gift] - Garrett Fromme

This video shows you how to make acrylic signs and engravings on a CNC router. Also considered glass etching, this type of project is done with a diamond drag bit.

This very cool Ultrasound / sonogram glass etching or engraving was done on a CNC router with a diamond engraving drag bit. When it comes to engraving bits for a CNC project, the diamond drag bit is excellent because you can do very fine details

Drag bits are often used on acrylic projects when you want to make LED lighted signs.

Etching with a drag bit is much easier and less messy than wood carving. There is glass dust but it remains very close to the etch line. A quick vacuum cleans it quickly.

This method also works with brass, aluminum, and any other soft metals.

It is STRONGLY recommended to use a spring-loaded drag bit when engraving on glass with a CNC router. This eliminates possible variations in pressure that can break the glass. It also is very forgiving for a spoil board that is uneven...you can have 0.25" variation and will still get a good project without damage or glass breaking.

Glass engraving can be done on any CNC router. This job was done on a BobsCNC evolution 4 (evo4)

CNC settings for the diamond drag bit:
→ Spindle remains off
→ the tool is setup as an endmill in the tool library
→ Feed 30 inches per minute
→ Depth of cut 0.05 to 0.1 inches

If you search Amazon for a spring-loaded drag bit, you will find one that is not Widgetworks brand. DO NOT BUY THAT ONE IF YOU WANT TO ENGRAVE ON GLASS. The ratings repeatedly say the tip breaks on glass and other hard materials.
