In Assam’s Nellie, severe violence broke out in 1983. Local people carried out attacks against Bengali-speaking communities, in which around 2,000 people were killed. Unofficial figures say nearly 5,000 people lost their lives in this violence. The root cause was the continuous influx of illegal immigrants — a problem the Congress governments failed to resolve for decades, leading to such circumstances. To investigate the violence, the Tewary Commission was set up, but Congress governments kept its report hidden for four decades. It has now been made public by Assam’s Himanta Biswa government.
