Classic TV Theme: Alice

Robert Getchell created 'Alice' (1976) after the success of his 1974 film 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore'. Both had the same plot: a widow wants to become a singer and sets off with her son, only to break down on the way and take a job at a diner. The movie won several awards, and the series ran for nine years. Through all nine the theme song was 'There's a New Girl in Town' by David Shire with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. It was performed by the show's star Linda Lavin, so 'Alice' was a singer all along. Several different arrangements were used over the years.
