This isn't much a food review video, I think it is best to describe as the places we love to eat in Penang. These are the few places that we actually love every time we come to Penang. I will list down the places in the description as well for your reference. Hope you all will love it as much as we did!
No. 1 : Green House Prawn Mee & Loh Mee
223 Jalan Burma, George Town, 10050, Malaysia
$ · Street Food
We have been coming back here for almost a decade. The taste of the noodles are pretty solid! And we love it especially when we added some roasted pork to the noodles! It is amazing! And also this stall made it to 2023's Michelin guide's Bib Gourmand.
No 2 : New Lane Street Foodstalls
Lorong Baru, George Town, 10450, Penang, Malaysia
Street Hawker In Front Of Sunway Hotel, Penang
$ · Street Food
Well, there are loads to eat here. From Ice Kacang to Satay, Koay Teow Th'ng to Char Koay Teow. It is actually a few blocks away from Green House Prawn Mee. We actually walked here from there to continue hunting for food. Well, we saw that the Char Koay Teow has a pretty long queue. So there it was. While I am sitting enjoying a nice cold fruit juice, Eric went and queue up for me! And the Char Koay Teow is actually not bad at all. I love it. However, the sotong kangkung, you guys can actually skip that. There are better ones in Gurney Drive or in Genting in Greenlane.
No 3 : Khoon Pastry House
29, Jalan Argyll, George Town, 10050 George Town, Pulau Pinang
$ · Cafe Food
Khoon Pastry House located in Jalan Argyll Penang is one of the many cafes that most people have forgotten. They are still one of the best restaurants to dine when you are located for some classic and authentic Hainan food like Hainanese Chicken Chop, Hainanese Spring Roll, Hainanese Chicken Rice and more. As we both are Hainanese descend, we don't recommend a Hainanese place that taste good often. As more times that we can remember, we would compare the food with how our grandparents use to make them.
The chicken chop and the mutton shepherd's pie are the star here.
No. 4 Kafe Heng Kuat
108, Lorong Selamat, George Town, 10400, Penang
$ · Street Food
The chef, Madam Soon Suan Choo has been frying Char Koay Teow for more than 40 years at Lorong Selamat and has just recently move to Kafe Heng Huat. She is reputable for frying a great plate of CKT, while at the same time notorious for her attitude. Nevertheless, one will never know until they have tried it themselves, both the taste and attitudes. But for our own taste buds, Leo enjoyed the one at the Hawker Center in front of Sunway Hotel better than this.
No. 5 Ghee Hiang Macalister Road Retail Boutique
216 Macalister Road, 10400 Penang
$ · Bakery
Ghee Hiang is famous for their tau sar piah (豆沙饼) and Sesame Oil. One of Leo's favorite things. And we all know he don't often go for pastries. Ever since I tried the ones in Kluang Johor, it is hard to beat that. But since we are in Penang, and Leo gotta get some souvenirs, this is perfect. And it is Halal certified too! And best part of this is, it is literally located next to our hotel. We don't have to go far to get souvenirs.
No. 6 : The Mugshot Cafe
302 Lebuh Chulia, Georgetown, 10200 Pulau Pinang
$ · Cafe Food
Well, we were just exploring Chulia Street in the evening waiting for the shop we wanted to go eat which opens at 9.30PM. So we just use google to find somewhere we could hang out and kill time. And we saw, "Best Croissant In Penang" and we went and gave it a try. And if you really love croissant, and have tried those croissant made at any Le Meridien hotels around the world, it is hard to beat. But it is a nice quaint cafe to hang out. But the lighting for taking photos sucks here.
No 7 : Nasi Kandar Beratur Original
98, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, 10200 Georgetown, Penang
$ · Street Food
Well, Penang is famous with Nasi Kandar. But we love the curry here. I would say there are many more that is better than here. But it is famous among locals here. The stall opens at 9.30PM sharp and the queue would start going and going till the other entrance of the mosque. This is one of the reason why we came early to beat the queue.
No. 8 : Pulau Tikus Wet Market Hawker Center (Morning)
Jalan Burma, Pulau Tikus, 10350, Penang
$ · Street Food
Morning market, and just walk right into the wet market. You will find this hawker center. Eric loves it here more of a nostalgia effect. He use to come here with his family for breakfast since he was a kid. But I have to say the Roast Pork is pretty good. Goes very well with the duck meat Koay Teow Th'ng.
No. 9 : Apom Balik
Just down the road from Pulau Tikus Market.
Honestly, every where you go you could easily find this. Especially those made by ,mamak or the Indian community. Those are the best. You would not go wrong with this. The Malay ones are on the sweeter side and the Chinese ones are thick.
