🎥 *This video is for students who are taking AS Chemistry*
📚 Questions about the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution appear in almost every unit 2 exam.
❓ *There are two formats of the questions:*
✏️ The first format is when they ask you to draw the curve.
🔹 You must start from the origin.
🔺 Raise the curve up.
🔻 Then fall down without touching the x-axis.
📊 *Understanding the curve:*
🔍 Look at the axes:
📈 On the y-axis: Amount of energy that particles have.
📊 On the x-axis: Number of particles.
🧐 *Key points about the curve:*
🎯 Start from the origin because there are no particles with zero energy.
📈 The peak of the curve represents the most probable energy of the particles.
📏 The average amount of energy is shown halfway through the x-axis.
⚡ The presence of activation energy (EA) represents the minimum energy necessary for the reaction to occur.
🔍 Small area beyond EA represents particles with enough energy to collide successfully and yield products.
🌡️ *Effect of temperature on the curve:*
🔥 Particles have more kinetic energy when you increase their temperature.
📈 The Maxwell curve shifts to the right and becomes lower with increased temperature.
🔄 The area under each curve does not change, indicating the same number of particles.
📈 More particles have energy greater than activation energy at higher temperatures.
✅ *Conclusion:*
⚛️ Only particles with energy greater than EA will react successfully.
🌡️ Increasing temperature gives particles more kinetic energy, necessary for successful collisions.
