On 8 March 1967, ITN broadcast a special report on the ongoing violence in the British colony of Aden. Under British rule since 1839, Aden had since 1963 become a front of the Arab Cold War, with Egyptian-backed, Arab-nationalist paramilitaries waging guerrilla war against the British presence. With the city's walls daubed in the anti-British slogans of the National Liberation Front (NLF) and the Front for the Liberation of Occupied South Yemen (FLOSY), ITN interviewed several British women about daily life amid the nationalist insurgency. ITN also spoke to Major Paddy Baxter, commanding officer of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, about the tactics being used to counter the rebels. The hurried British departure from Aden would be completed later that year, on 30 November 1967, earlier than originally planned by Prime Minister Harold Wilson and without any agreement on the future of Aden's governance.
