James Kalm changes hats (er...) bike helmet, from art world reporter to art historian/educator. Having been a fan of the French painting movement Support/Surface since the early 1970s it was a panel discussion and current survey exhibition at Canada that utzed him to consider the question: What makes this group of radical painters influential to younger artists here in New York at this time? Deciding it would be interesting and instructive to provide viewers with examples and notions of legacy, your reporter, then trips up the Bowery a few blocks and performs a run-through viewing of "Warp & Woof" a serendipitously scheduled show that displays works by several artists who, perhaps unknowingly, are extending many of the theoretic and aesthetic principles that brought Support/Surface to prominence nearly forty years ago.
