June 2010 Colo. Joint Line Legacy, UP Ringling Circus, UP SD70M SD70ACe, BNSF KCS FXE ES44AC, EMDX!
Colorado Front Range railroad Burlington Northern Santa Fe was busy hauling coal trains and mixed freights on the mountainous Joint Line between Denver and Pueblo, over the Palmer Divide. The Union Pacific was honored with handling the famous Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train (Blue Unit), north from Colorado Springs. Classic UP locomotive types included SD70M and SD70ACe class engines. Old SD70MAC diesels joined SD70ACe, C44-9W, ES44AC, and the occasional predecessor-railroad GP38-2 unit, on BNSF trains. Lease units from Kansas City Southern, Ferromex and Electro-Motive Diesel also traversed the Colorado Joint Line. This is one of a series of Legacy vignettes showcasing this exciting mountain rail route.
