Silent Ponies - lyrics by Sally Marsh, music by Indika

There is a terrible problem in the New Forest with pony deaths on the roads. People drive too fast, don't drive within their stopping distances and visual fields and generally don't take the care they need to. So they hit the ponies, the donkeys, the cows, the pigs and all the other forest creatures. Today, a pony was decapitated by a driver.

A fellow horse lover from the forest, Sally Marsh, wrote a very moving poem about it. It touched my heart so I turned the poem into a song and quickly made a video to illustrate it. It is my hope that this will reach people and make them drive a bit more slowly and carefully in this magical wonderland of a forest that we are so lucky to call home.

I thought I would share it here too. It's not the best video I ever made, but I think it is effective nonetheless. It made me cry!

Lyrics

Along the quiet forest roads a silent vigil is peacefully held.
By the ghosts of the ponies left to die, who wait for another to join them in up in the sky.
Between the dusk and the morning light, comes the time to fight for life.
The drivers are speeding, they roar around, their screaming engines the only sound.
In a flash the pony is mercilessly struck, but to the driver it's just a moment of bad luck.
Burning tail lights drive away, as he moans that he will have to get his car fixed the following day.
The pony lies where shadows dwell, there's no one around, no one to help.
She soon becomes another spirit in the herd in the sky.
While we are all left behind asking why, why , why?
