Breakdown of Higher Hydrocarbons with High Boiling Point into Low Hydrocarbons with Low Boiling Point.
Volatile.
What is Volatile?
The Low Hydrocarbons are of variety of Alkanes and Alkenes.
C₁₆H₃₄ Heat C₇H₁₆ + 3CH₂=CH₂ + CH₃-CH=CH₂

Types of Cracking:
1. Thermal Cracking
For Breakdown when we use High Temperature and Pressure it is called Thermal Cracking.
It is used to get Unsaturated Hydrocarbons like Ethene, Propene.
2. Catalytic Cracking
For breakdown, we use low temperature (500°C) and low pressure (2 atm) with a catalyst.
Typically, we use a mixture of Silica (SiO₂) and Alumina (Al₂O₃).
It is used to obtain gasoline with a higher octane number.
3. Steam Cracking
Higher hydrocarbons in the vapor phase mixed with steam for a short time at 900°C and cooled rapidly.
Used to obtain lower unsaturated hydrocarbons.
