Hello Students.
Welcome to Solution Academy India.
IUPAC nomenclature is a systematic way of naming chemical compounds, ensuring clarity and consistency across the field. It's governed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
Key Components:
Parent Chain: The longest continuous chain of carbon atoms in the molecule.
Substituents: Groups attached to the parent chain, like halogens, alkyl groups, or functional groups.
Suffix: Indicates the primary functional group present.
Prefixes: Indicate the number and type of substituents.
Basic Steps:
Identify the Parent Chain:
Find the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms.
If there's a tie, choose the chain with the most substituents.
Number the Chain:
Start numbering from the end closest to the substituent or functional group.
Assign the lowest possible numbers to the substituents.
Name the Substituents:
List substituents alphabetically.
Use prefixes like "di-", "tri-", etc., for multiple identical substituents.
Combine the Parts:
List substituents with their numbers and names, separated by hyphens.
Add the parent chain name with the appropriate suffix.
