On 7 September, five Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens — known as AmaPanyaza — were injured in a shocking shooting near Daveyton Railway Station, east of Johannesburg.
The wardens, two women and three men, came under heavy fire during a routine stop-and-search when suspects opened fire with high-calibre weapons, including an AK-47.
One warden remains in critical condition while others are recovering in hospital. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has condemned the attack, calling it a senseless act of violence, and praised the wardens’ bravery for standing on the frontline of South Africa’s war against crime.
The South African Police Service has launched an attempted murder investigation and is appealing for public assistance in tracking down the suspects.
