Buying European and Sustainable Is Good Value for Public Money
Insights from Italy to Europe after a decade of mandatory Green Public Procurement
Public procurement is a key policy tool for Europe’s green, industrial and social transition. Every year, public authorities spend around 14% of EU GDP on goods, services and works. How this spending is directed will play a crucial role in achieving climate objectives, strengthening European value chains and supporting quality employment.
This event is promoted by Fondazione Ecosistemi, within the framework of the BESA – Buy European and Sustainable Act campaign, and is hosted at the European Parliament by Nicola Zingaretti, Head of the S&D Delegation. It brings together European and national policymakers, public administrations, experts and civil society to discuss the ongoing revision of the EU Public Procurement Directives.
Building on Italy’s experience with mandatory Green Public Procurement and Minimum Environmental Criteria, the discussion explores how binding sustainability requirements and European content criteria can turn public spending into a strategic lever for the Green Deal, industrial competitiveness and social cohesion.
The event is part of the pathway “GPP 20 – Towards Compraverde 20”, which accompanies the European debate leading up to the 20th edition of the Compraverde Buygreen Forum in 2026. Its aim is to contribute concretely to the ongoing revision of the EU Public Procurement Directives, currently under discussion in Brussels.
