This week, the Basement brings us a taste of what TV was like the evening of February 3, 1990 on WHDH-TV, then a CBS affiliate. I promise the next video will have better video quality.
0:00 to 0:30 – Pantene feat. Elena (couldn’t find too much information on Elena, but did find that this was part of a series of Pantene ads directed by renowned Vogue photographer Arthur Elgort. Here’s a Chicago Tribune article about the ads: http://tinyurl.com/zy7e8qb)
0:30 to 1:00 – Nyquil (maybe it’s just me, but I’m sorry we as a society don’t really wear hats anymore.)
1:02 to 1:32 – Burger King Bonus Bag (as random as the coupons offered are---seriously, they had a coupon for an encyclopedia set, and a GOOD one at that!---this promotion was a response to then-lagging sales during the early-90s recession http://tinyurl.com/z3ypzjy)
1:33 to 2:03 – Huggies “Goldilocks”
2:04 to 2:33 – JC Penney (over a quarter century later, you can still pick up full size bath towels at JCPenney for $8. Whether that fact is the cause of the company's recent financial struggles--- http://tinyurl.com/zomx2wj---or merely a symptom is an exercise left to the viewer)
2:34 to 2:44 – “Garfield and Friends” promo
2:44 to 3:02 – “City” promo (one of the things you learn when you’ve done twenty of these videos is that Valerie Harper was EVERYWHERE in the 80s and early 90s)
3:03 to 3:07 – CBS/WNEV interstitial
3:08 to 3:18 – AIDS: Facts for Life PSA feat. Tonya Crowe (best known for playing Olivia Cunningham on “Knots Landing” and Marylee Williams in 1981’s “Dark Night of the Scarecrow”, Tonya Crowe has acted sporadically since the series’ end in 1993. Today, she works as a yoga instructor.)
3:20 to 3:49 – Cracker Barrel (while Kraft is well within its rights to crow about those awards (http://tinyurl.com/gnnmvgz), I seem to recall a recent incident where, in a blind taste test, New Jersey wines beat out French wines…http://tinyurl.com/jc9dbps )
3:49 to 4:19 – Grand Gourmet dog food
4:20 to 4:30 – Major Dad promo
4:31 to 4:50 – The Bradys (From Uproxx --- http://tinyurl.com/zawudlp--
“The Bradys was a 1990 CBS continuation of The Brady Bunch, though this new series decided to ditch the concept of a half-hour comedy and, instead, transform the series into an hour-long drama… This really would be like if Fuller House took itself completely seriously and we, the audience, were expected to just accept all of this as normal.”
Here’s the first episode, where Bobby gets paralyzed from the waist down after a racing accident---seriously, it was that kind of show: • Видео .
It’s also kinda melancholy to think it’s not going to be that much longer before “The Brady Bunch” is half a century old.)
4:54 to 5:23 – Dunkin’ Donuts (that’s Michael Vale portraying Fred the Baker, a character Vale played from 1981 to 1997. While best known for Fred, Vale was also known for his Sam Breakstone character, who advertised for Breakstone Sour Cream, as seen here: • Видео )
5:24 to 5:54 – WNEV “The State We’re In” promo (sadly, like all the other local newscast features I've featured, next to nothing else related to "The State We're In" exists online.)
5:55 to 5:59 – News 7 New England update
5:59 to 6:29 – Hallmark feat. Valentine Bear (the bear can be had for between $8 and $14 on eBay these days http://tinyurl.com/jbfdyqw)
6:31 to 6:45 – McDonald’s feat. Atz Kilcher and a moose (that is the very same Atz Kilcher from the Discovery Channel’s “Alaska: The Last Frontier”, and the father of singer-songwriter Jewel)
6:47 to 7:16 – Triaminic DM
7:17 to 7:32 – Nut & Honey Crunch O’s
7:33 to 7:42 – Pee Wee’s Playhouse promo
7:42 to 8:03 – Newhart promo feat. George McGovern / Doctor Doctor promo (that is, in fact, 1972 presidential candidate George McGovern, and you can watch his “Newhart” episode here: • Видео . “Doctor Doctor” was a sitcom starring Matt Frewer, late of “Max Headroom”, playing a doctor in Providence, RI. You can watch the first episode here: • Doctor Doctor - Pilot (Part 1 of 3) )
8:04 to 8:33 – Children’s Nyquil
8:34 to 8:49 – McDonald’s feat. Mayor J. P. Calhoun (this was part of a series of ads that featured the small, isolated city of Homer, AK, population 5,310. Situated on the Kenai Peninsula over 220 miles SW of Anchorage, it is best known as the home of the Kilcher family and birthplace of Motel 6's Tom Bodett. J. P. Calhoun now works as a realtor in town. You can watch a third “Homer” ad here: • Scott Turkington Homer Alaska McDonald 199... . Also, they enjoyed their 99 cent Quarter Pounders that year, since the 49ers trounced the Broncos 55-10.)
8:50 to 9:20 – Walt Disney World
9:22 to 9:36 – Kraft Cheez Whiz Zap-a-Pack
9:36 to 10:08 – Pedigree Dog Food
