If you want to use your old iMac as a linked secondary screen for your new M-series based Mac's, you can do this using the Luna Display hardware/software option. Luna Display enables you to connect your iMac to use as a screen/monitor and still access its hard drive with its integrated graphics card to enable you to easily pair this with a new Mac.
In this video I show you my set up, using the USB-C Luna Display 'dongle', showing you how I connect my Late 2015 27inch Retina 5K iMac, to use it as a perfect second screen connected to my M1 MacStudio.
