------------
There have been three rikishi named Wakanohana in sumo history.
This time, I want to focus on Wakanohana the third. His nickname was “the Ogre of the Dohyō.”
As he himself said, “I specialize in throwing my opponents.”
Rather than pushing them out, he preferred throwing techniques.
In his bouts, he always tried to catch his opponent’s mawashi using his enormous core and arm strength.
Once he secured the grip, he often pulled the opponent’s chest close to his own. In fact, his chest line functioned like a radar, allowing him to read the flow of his opponent’s power. When their chests were close, he could monitor subtle internal information from his opponent, and his sensitivity was exceptionally sharp.
This is why he was able to use Yobimodoshi, a very rare kimarite that requires reading minute changes in an opponent’s flow of power.
