J.S. Bach "Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr" (BWV 1115)
Chorale prelude from the Neumeister Collection (LHS385: With all my heart I love thee Lord)
Graham Lieschke, 1992 Smenge organ, St Johns Southgate, Melbourne

The chorale has long been used as a funeral hymn, perhaps contributing to the selection of its 3rd verse to conclude the St John Passion. However, the reference to angels has also led to its association with St Michael's Day (Sept 29th), and it appears in two St Michael's Day cantatas (BWV19, 149). In BWV19, it is as an instrumental quotation of the tune. BWV149 concludes with verse 3 - here Bach surprises by reserving the trumpets and timpani solely for a dramatic flourish on the final cadence.
It is this same text that I had in mind when interpreting this prelude (LHS385v3):
O Lord, let thine own angels come, / When I must die, to bear me home, / My soul to heaven taking.
My body, in its chamber still, / Securely keep from wrong and ill, / Till earth's last great awakening.
Then raise me, Lord, to be with Thee, / That these mine eyes with joy may see, / O Son of God, Thy glorious face, / My Saviour, and my fount of grace.
Lord Jesus Christ, / Give ear to me, hear, I implore, / That I may praise Thee evermore.
