Artbook “The Quarantine Sketchbook” (Mike Mignola)

¿Qué hicisteis vosotros durante el confinamiento por COVID de 2020? El legendario creador de Hellboy, Mike Mignola, decidió ponerse a dibujar. Realizando cada día un dibujo a lápiz de un personaje diferente y haciendo las delicias de sus seguidores al compartirlos en redes sociales. Desde esqueletos elegantes hasta hortalizas monstruosas, pasando por reinterpretaciones de multitud de personajes de la cultura pop.

Según cuenta su esposa, Christine Mignola, encargada del prólogo del libro, cada noche conversaban sobre qué personaje podría dibujar al día siguiente: Los Picapiedra, Hora de Aventuras, Thundercats, HEMAN… era una forma de mantener la creatividad viva en medio del encierro. Muy pronto, esos dibujos se convirtieron en un pequeño fenómeno en redes sociales.

Decidieron entonces subastar las piezas originales para donar los fondos a la organización World Central Kitchen, del chef José Andrés, que ofrecía comidas a personas afectadas por la pandemia. El resultado fue extraordinario: más de 325.000 dólares recaudados a través de las subastas. Lo que me parece algo maravilloso, Mike pudo dedicarse a no hacer nada, quejarse o lamentarse como hicimos muchos… Pero no, él encontró una forma de entretenerse, entretener a los demás y ayudar a los que más lo necesitaban al mismo tiempo, ¡es genial!

Y para rematar la jugada, se publica el libro que podéis ojear hoy y que lleva por título “The Quarantine Sketchbook” (DarkHorse), para que todos pudiéramos disfrutar de aquellos dibujos.

Éste concretamente fue un préstamo (¡gracias Julián!) para poder echarle un vistazo y confirmar que es un libro que merece la pena tener en la colección.

What did you do during the COVID lockdown in 2020? The legendary creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, decided to start drawing. Each day, he created a new pencil sketch of a different character, much to the delight of his followers, as he shared them on social media. From elegant skeletons to monstrous vegetables, including reinterpretations of countless pop culture characters.

According to his wife, Christine Mignola, who wrote the book’s foreword, every night they would talk about which character he might draw next: The Flintstones, Adventure Time, Thundercats, He-Man… It was a way to keep creativity alive during the lockdown. Very soon, those drawings became a small online phenomenon.

They then decided to auction off the original pieces and donate the proceeds to World Central Kitchen, the organization led by chef José Andrés, which provided meals to people affected by the pandemic. The result was extraordinary: over $325,000 raised through the auctions.
I think that’s just wonderful — Mike could have chosen to do nothing, to complain or feel sorry for himself, as many of us did… But instead, he found a way to keep himself busy, entertain others, and help those in need at the same time. That’s amazing!

And to top it all off, the book you can browse today was published: The Quarantine Sketchbook (Dark Horse), so that everyone can enjoy those drawings.

This particular copy was a loan (thanks, Julián!) so I could take a look and confirm that it’s a book truly worth having in any collection.
