Bulk Method/Mass Method/Population Method:
This method was proposed by Nilsson-Ehle in 1908 at Savlof. (JRF 2014)
In this method, F, and subsequent generations are harvested in mass or bulk to rise the next generation, at the end of bulking period individual plants are selected and evaluated in a similar manner as in the pedigree method. The crucial difference between pedigree and bulk method lies in the manner innwhich segregating generations are handled. There are three main applications of bulk method of breeding:
1. Isolation of homozygous line, which is a most common use with minimum efforts. Generally takes For F, generations.
2. Waiting for the opportunity of selection, such as selection for disease resistance, lodging and different tolerances as this method can last up to several generations. This method is generally known as the mass-pedigree method of Harlen.
3. Opportunity for natural selection may be providing. After F, natural selection would act on homozygous plants and would change the frequency of homozygous genotypes present in the population. As the method takes the evolutionary steps it was called Evolutionary method of breeding by Suneson. Up to the generation F, to F, planting is done at the commercial seed rates and spacing
