Everlasting covenant required painful obedience: Genesis 17

God shows up again to Abram in Genesis 17 with a reconfirmation of his promises to Abram and his wife Sarai. Their names are changed to Abraham and Sarah to demonstrate that they will truly becomes parents of kings and countless generations to come. They think this is hilarious because they are beyond child bearing age, but this time ‘next year’ Sarah was to give birth to a son that they will name Isaac. And of course, she did. To seal this covenantal promise, Abraham was to circumcise not only himself and his two sons, Ishmael and baby Isaac, but every male in his household whether regardless of familial relationship or not.
