NOTE FROM TED: This talk begins with a story of self-harm and a suicide attempt. This talk represents the speaker's personal views and experiences in policing. Officer David Maliar has worn many hats — from talking to sixth graders at school to de-escalating dangerous situations as a crisis negotiator. But after more than a decade in law enforcement, he found there’s one often undervalued, yet highly effective tactic: kindness. David Maliar has been a police officer since 2012. In that time, he has worked as a school resource officer, field training officer, an FBI-trained crisis negotiator, and instructor specializing in de-escalation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Central Connecticut State University and is currently earning a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice and Corrections. Maliar is also the author of both adult and children’s books and has volunteered with the Special Olympics of Connecticut Law Enforcement Torch Run. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
