Lets start with stripping insulation from the wire

If too much insulation is stripped, to much wire can be exposed and this can cause short

If too little insulation is stripped, then when we go to make our wire connection, we might not get full wire contact because the insulation is in the way. Leading to poor electrical connections.

Tools used to strip insulation

Wire Stripper - Easy to use , Inconsistent results

Calibrated wire stripper - Repeatable, consistent results and Great for high precision work like panel building

Ways to prepare wire for termination

Normal stranded wire - Twist to avoid fraying or bird caging
Solid wire
Wire tinning
Uses solder to bind the strands of wire together
This will eliminate the possibility of fraying or bird caging
This can be very labor intensive, but effective.
Ferrules - a connector that is crimped onto the wire
prevents bird caging and fraying of the wire
They can be more expensive
Offer the best protection for wire connection surface
Important to ensure the proper amount of insulation is stripped away for a solid crimp

Tools used for ferrules

Ferrule crimper - Only crimps the ferrule, and nothing else

Cuts, strips, twists and crimps the wire. All in one tool
Provides excellent results
Consistent clean connections
Can be expensive initial investment.

Check your wire. Is it UL rated?

Some wire from certain parts of the world will use less copper strands, and other less conductive metals in the wire to save money.

This can lead to poor conductivity and wire failure.

Check to make sure your wire meets and NEC or UL standards.
