Saps Donut Mill, (Saps Bakery) was located at National Road and Central Avenue in Columbus, Indiana. Philip R. “Sap” Essex and his brother Tom Essex began making doughnuts in downtown Columbus in 1948. In 1960 the Essex Brother built “Saps Donut Mill” at this location. Sap’s Donuts were touted as the “World’s Best-Selling Donut”, and ask anyone from Columbus and they will tell you that’s true. In 1972 Sap’s merged with Beatrice Foods. Then in 1979 Interstate Brands purchased the plant, and that later became Hostess. The parent company Hostess Brands operated the snack cake plant as Dolly Madison Bakery. Flower Foods (Wonder, Nature’s Own, Bunny, Sunbeam), bought the plant and decided not to continue operation of the plant. A stipulation to selling the property was the plant could not be operated as a bakery, so the plant would not fall into competitor’s hands, the plant was closed.
