Relax and be transported into the mesmerizing world of wings and waves on the western-most coast of Canada.
Meet the surf scoter, a striking sea duck that helps connect ecosystems across North America. Each year, these birds undertake a remarkable migration along the Pacific Flyway, traveling from their wintering grounds along the coast of British Columbia to remote breeding areas in northern Canada and Alaska. Surf scoters nest near shallow freshwater lakes in the taiga-tundra transition zone.
Along their journey, surf scoters rely on nutrient-rich coastal habitats like the Salish Sea and Great Bear Rainforest, where they stop to feed on Pacific herring eggs during the spring spawn. These high-energy eggs are critical for building the fat reserves needed for their long flight north and successful breeding season. In the marine environment, scoters also feed on clams, mussels, and other invertebrates they dive for in shallow coastal waters.
By moving between ocean, estuary, and inland lake ecosystems, surf scoters play a unique ecological role—transporting nutrients across vast distances and linking ecosystems thousands of kilometres apart. Their migrations are a reminder of how interconnected our coastal and northern environments truly are.
