Blagdon Lake a is now a beautiful vista when viewed from above. It attracts walkers, fishermen and birdwatchers to its famed banks, but it was not always there. In the late 19th century Bristol's burgeoning population was running short of reliable sources of water, so an imaginative scheme was launched to harness the Mendip springs and rivers. This illustrated talk covers the Yeo reservoir and pumping project from its inception to what we have today, highlighting the people who flocked to work on it, the engineering problems encountered, the effects on the surrounding neighbourhood, the architecture of the many associated buildings and its lasting legacy. An opportunity to see historic photographs and the results of research using Company minutes, newspapers of the day and anecdotes collected by BLHS.
