On December 11th, 1941, the deputies of the Reichstag met in the Kroll Opera House in Berlin. Adolf Hitler walks to the podium, he is about to declare war on America. At that point, the American Army is still relatively small, about one and a half million soldiers, built on a modest pre-war core and still training for a conflict it has only just entered. But Hitler had no idea that in less than four years, that same U-S Army will grow to well over eight million soldiers. And over the course of the war roughly sixteen million Americans will wear a uniform. This is the account of what Hitler said the moment he learned America was building a new army of 8 million men, and how German generals confronted the scale of an army they had not expected the U-S to build.
