The Bagatelles were composed around 1914, during a period when Sibelius was increasingly focusing on smaller forms and piano music, partly for practical reasons: he was in financial difficulty and hoped that shorter, accessible piano works would sell better and provide income.
The set was intended for domestic music-making—amateur and student pianists playing at home—rather than for the concert stage.
Sibelius had a complicated relationship with the piano. While he was a capable pianist, he didn’t feel entirely comfortable writing for the instrument, which may explain the relative simplicity and brevity of these works compared to his orchestral compositions.
The title Rêverie means “daydream” in French, and Sibelius’ sixth Bagatelle unfolds with just that spirit: quiet, introspective, and gently suspended in time. The music drifts with a calm, lyrical flow, avoiding strong rhythms or dramatic contrasts. Harmonies move slowly, as if one thought leads softly into the next, creating a sense of inner stillness. It’s one of the most atmospheric pieces in the set—a moment of pause and reflection, capturing the fragile, half-lit mood of a solitary reverie.
