The 2010s are often remembered as the golden age of piracy.
At the time, peer-to-peer platforms like BitTorrent made up nearly a third of global internet traffic. Limewire had more monthly users than Facebook, and The Pirate Bay became the go-to hub where (hypothetically) people could find almost anything.
As the world transitioned from physical to digital media, even casual users realized that digital files could be copied infinitely at virtually no cost. At its peak, an estimated 95% of music downloads were pirated, largely because it was the fastest, cheapest, and most convenient way to build large digital collections on increasingly affordable hard drives.
But then… it all slowed down.
Despite faster internet, cheaper storage, and greater digital literacy after 2012, peer-to-peer file sharing steadily declined. By 2015, piracy had collapsed as streaming platforms like Spotify and Netflix offered safer, easier, and more convenient alternatives.
Yet today, with subscription costs climbing, libraries shrinking, and user experiences declining, piracy is beginning to re-emerge. The story may seem simple, but the truth runs deeper…
