In this video I show how to make fire starters for super cheap (approximately $0.03 each)! These are long lasting fire starters and stand up well even in a little wind.
All you need are:
cardboard egg cartons (free) - *Don't use the styrofoam ones*
dryer lint (free)
candle wax ($0.33 candles each)
twisted jute twine ($3 for 200 feet) - because this stuff burns quickly.
Also, good to have:
good scissors for cutting the cartons
a way to melt the wax. I used a 1 quart (1 liter) glass canning jar with a wide enough mouth to dip into. Place the candle into the jar and place the jar into a pot of water and boil until the wax is melted.
wax paper to dry the fire starters without making a mess.
To make 48 fire starters:
I used 4 x one dozen sized cartons. I also saved my dryer lint throughout the year in a plastic bag saved from a loaf of bread, and used approximately half the bag. I used the melted wax from three small candles. Finally, I used about 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) of jute twine per fire starter.
The process was simple:
1. Cut the cardboard egg cartons into 12 individual cups.
2. Fill each cup about half full of dryer lint (up to the top of the cup part, but below where the folds will be).
3. Fold over the tops of each cup to make a small package.
4. Tie the jute twine around the package both ways and double-knot.
5. Dip the tied package into the melted candle wax.
6. Place the waxed fire starter on the wax paper sheet until dry.
To use the fire starters:
1. Prepare the fireplace with wood and kindling (as much or as little as you like). I don't usually use kindling because these things burn long enough for the fire to catch on to dried pine firewood.
2. Place the fire starter in an accessible location near the bottom of the wood stack in the fireplace.
3. Light the fire starter with a match.
4. Enjoy.
As with any dangerous objects, please use caution around fire. Also, be sure to be safe around the hot melting candle wax, especially if pets or children are nearby. I’m not responsible for any injury or damage you may experience.
