Making a Jatoba Box to Hold Chess Pieces

I haven't posted in a while but I'm finally back! A few projects have held me up a bit and this is one of them. This box is similar to ones I've built in the past but I ran into a few issues this time around. Along with some other side projects, this seemed to drag on so I've decided not to add a voiceover. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below and I'll answer them as best as I can.

The box is made of solid Jatoba which is very heavy and dense. This wood gave my bandsaw a run for it's money but the 16" jointer/planer handled it without issue. The corners are joined with box jointer using the Incra iBox and a dado stack.

The top and bottom panels float in place using a few 1/8" grooves. I pre-finished the interior because it would be easier to reach before assembly and I would be adding fiber flocking later on.

The inner grid work is made of 1/4" maple and was built to the clients specification. This grid would hold a brand new chess set. The height of the box was dictated by the tallest pieces. Fiber flocking was added to the interior to protect the pieces.

The hardware on this box comes from Brusso. The finish is General Finishes High Performance.
