Thesis University of Karachi DOVS (Covid responsive Hospital design)

During current (Covid19) pandemic in Pakistan people are scared to go to hospital even for their terminal illnesses like heart problems, Diabetes and etc. Covid19 exposed the problems in medical system not just in Pakistan but throughout the world. Current pandemic has also put forth more focus on solving (HAI) hospital acquired infections. Young Doctors are also refusing to work in hospitals. In peak time of virus infection in Pakistan only patients with appointments are allowed to visit. Many doctors and medical staff working in medical ICU’s them self-becoming victim to covid19.
Therefore, the objective of this research is to highlight the problems and short coming of existing hospital design, as there are several variables that make it difficult for traditional hospital architectural design to meet the requirements or flexibility to tackle current pandemic diseases or future viral outbreaks. The secondary objective of this research paper is to explore the possible solutions for the highlighted shortcoming in hospital design for viral Aerosol disease management.
The planning and design of hospital buildings as a whole should shifts towards controlling the spread of infectious diseases and healing Human illnesses. The current pandemic (covid19) has created new challenges for Aerosol infection management in current hospital design. Specifications for traditional hospital designed architectural spaces have to change.
