The Ballard Locks, officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, opened in 1917 after six years of construction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Built at a cost of about $3 million, the locks transformed Seattle’s waterways by connecting Puget Sound with Lake Union and Lake Washington, creating a vital route for boats, commerce, and travel. Named after Hiram M. Chittenden, the engineer who oversaw the project, the locks remain one of Seattle’s most visited attractions—blending maritime history, engineering marvels, and Pacific Northwest culture.
