ROOOOOLLLLLINNNG STAAAAAARRRTTTT!!!
The all-time classic of arcade racing. That's how Daytona USA can be described. Simply the greatest seller in all of arcade -- not even Pac-Man, Space Invaders, or even Street Fighter II (sorry, Capcom) could come up close profitting that much.
A uncompromised take on the semi-realism of Namco's "Ridge Racer", Daytona takes the most american of all motorsports, NASCAR Stock Cars, and throws the well-known SEGA factor everybody cares about and loves in the mix, with its speedy, windy and tricky circuits, slowdown-free experience, 8-player multiplay and rock-solid 3D graphics with that "blocky" flavor only the 90's soul could bring.
The drill is simple: Pop your quarters in, pick a track, a transmission type and START YOUR ENGINES. No further ado. Razor-sharp, straight-to-the-point. You versus the clock and an army of 39 CPU racers, all of them vicious for victory. From drafting to powersliding, every strategy is your competitive edge to victory.
Even thirty years later, Daytona aged surprisingly well and still manages to keep up with most modern racers. It's alright to say that it is pretty short and hasn't much to offer, but think again -- it was the 90's, and games back then didn't needed to pack in hours and hours of cutscenes and dialogues to be fun. Alas, for me, what makes a game is its fun factor. Something Daytona had in stock all these years and still has.
