How to make TORRIJAS: Spanish-Style French Toast | Torrijas tradicionales | Spanish Easter Dessert

¡Hola chicos! Easter is just around the corner, so I’m excited to share one of my favorite Spanish traditional dishes for this season:Torrijas! I grew up eating these during Easter, and this recipe is absolutely delicious!

⁉️What are Torrijas?
Torrijas are Spain’s version of French toast, a beloved Easter treat that only makes a brief appearance each year but is a big deal when it does! Unlike other European bread puddings, torrijas are traditionally fried in olive oil instead of butter (no surprise, since Spain is the world's top producer of olive oil!)

A Bit of History 📖
This dish has been around for centuries, with variations dating back to Roman times and widespread mentions appearing in the 16th century. Originally, torrijas were a practical way to use up stale bread while providing an affordable sweet treat for families with limited resources.

By the late Middle Ages, torrijas became closely tied to Lent and Holy Week (Semana Santa), often enjoyed as a substitute for meat in the Lenten diet. In religious traditions, they were even consumed with wine to symbolize the body and blood of Christ.

Today, torrijas remain a staple Easter dessert in Spain, and once you try them, you’ll see why!

Ingredients for 8 torrijas:
• Milk (500ml or 2.11 cups)
• Eggs (3)
• Bread (preferably stale)
• Orange peel
• Ground cinnamon
• A cinnamon stick
• Sugar
• Cooking oil
