In this video on Battle Creek, Michigan history I explore the founding of a city and how it came to be that Sands McCamly built a canal. Sands McCamly arrived in the Michigan territory in 1831, and it took him four years to acquire the land that he desired to establish his vision of a city between the confluences of two rivers. In 1835 after finally acquiring the land which is today downtown Battle Creek, and the surrounding areas, he built a millrace between the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo rivers establishing the foundation of industrial development which would give rise to a city in the wilderness.
The millrace canal no longer exists, having long since been filled in. Industry changed from water power, to steam, to electricity and gas as the decades rolled on. However there exists a monument to the milling history of the era in downtown Battle Creek, at Mill Race Park. There is also McCamly Park which bears his name, as well does one of the main roads in the downtown district.
