According to oral tradition, the Akans, who constitute the largest ethnic group in Ghana, originally migrated from the ancient Bono State. Specifically, they settled in a historical location known as Bono Manso, which is now a suburb in the Techiman Municipality.
Interestingly, the Fantes, another Akan group, migrated from Techiman to found the coastal Mankessim Kingdom in 1252. Over time, other Akan people followed suit, forming their own states and city-states, including the now-extinct Adanse state, the Akyem, and Akwamu states, among others.
In 1723, the Ashanti Empire conquered Bono Manso, the capital of the Bono state. As a result, the Bono-Techiman state was founded in 1740 under Ashanti sovereignty. However, all Akans, according to oral tradition, settled and migrated from Bono, remaining part of the Bono State until it was eventually conquered by the Ashantis in war.
Techiman, located at a historical crossroads of trade routes and the Tano River, now serves as the capital of the Techiman Municipal District and is home to West Africa's largest traditional market. 🌍🏙️
