All of the sound you hear is created by varying the speed that the three stepper motors turn at.
MIDI signals are interpreted by an Arduino, which commands the appropriate motor speeds for the notes it receives, making music!
The music box was built and programmed over the course of one week for Carnegie Mellon University's Build18.
