What is Sham-e-Ghariban?

Sham-e-Ghariban literally means “The Night of the Destitute” or “The Night of the Oppressed.”
It refers to the night of the 10th of Muharram (Youm-e-Ashura) — the evening after the Battle of Karbala — when Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his companions were martyred.

Historical Context:

After the brutal massacre in Karbala:
• Imam Hussain (a.s.), his family, and 72 loyal companions were martyred.
• Only the women and children, along with Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (a.s.), who was ill, remained alive.
• These survivors were left alone, grieving, and without shelter, surrounded by the enemies.
• Their tents were burned, their belongings looted, and they were taken as prisoners by Yazid’s army.
