The Edible Schoolyard in Berkley, California is a shining example of how a garden can be used as an outdoor classroom, utilizing all of the children’s senses to bring book learning to life. At a time when most children are only interested in television and video games, The Edible Schoolyard uses a natural setting to teach every aspect of their core curriculum (math, science, language arts, social studies, nutrition awareness, etc.). The students here also learn about taking the garden full circle, from planting seeds to harvesting and returning any waste back to the earth through composting. They also learn to cook with what they grow and use some of the produce in their own cafeteria menus. Educators across America are following the Edible Schoolyard’s example and incorporating educational gardens into their own school programs. By doing so, they are instilling, better academic retention and “cultivating” a whole new generation of stewards of the earth. Viewers will see the benefits of educational gardens and learn how even small aspects of such a program can be incorporated into their own communities.
