About Mount Akagi:
Mount Akagi (赤城山, Akagi-yama, Red Fortress) is a mountain in Gunma Prefecture, Japan.
It is a massif surrounding Maebashi City, the capital of Gunma Prefecture, which is located near the center of Japan. It is approximately 110 km from Tokyo and it takes about two hours by car or train. Mt. Akagi is a tourist spot where you can enjoy mountain climbing, trekking, hiking, and gourmet food in natural surroundings. You can also enjoy Japanese history and hot springs throughout the year. It is one of the Jomo Sanzan, or Three Famous Mountains of Gunma, along with Mt. Myogi and Mt. Haruna. It is at the northern edge of the Kanto plain, which means you can see it quite easily from most prefectures in the Kanto area, including Saitama, Tokyo and Tochigi.
About the ride course:
The course of this downhill ride is actually the course being used for the hillclimb event being held annually (The Akagi Hill Climb Tournament ). The course runs up from Maebashi city area to the summit of Akagiyama on Prefectural Road 4. The route distance is 20.8km and the altitude difference is 1,313m. The average slope is 6.4%, while the maximum is 9.7%, and overall the slope change is littleon the entire course.
I started my climb exactly from Maebashi Station, which had a total ditance of 25.5 kms up until the summit of the mountain with a maximum elevation of 1,428 meters. The distance when I made the descent from the top was of course the same, but due to my camera running out of battery (I plugged it to a charger while using it but for some reason it did not charge!) I was only able to record less than 16 minutes, which would only be about 9 kilometers of the entire descent. I averaging 34 km/h on my way down (my apologies if the calculations are incorrect!).
I wanted to go faster but at the start of the descent there was an obvious squeaky noise created by my brakes when I started using them, though I am really not sure if it was the front or rear brake. I did not bother stopping to check it, and decided to just be cautious all the way down, which was a good thing because I was able to appreciate the impressive autumn foliage around the mountain while descending.
