What skill are we covering today? Soccer 1v2
Point 1 for the 2 v 1 soccer drills is that a good defender is going to force you into their supporting teammate, but a good striker is going to travel to the outside slightly where they only have to beat one defender to shoot the ball.
Point 2 for the 1 v 2 soccer drills is that all it takes is a simple foot skill, such as a jab/feint or scissors in the direction towards the second defender and then push the ball to the outside of the first defender you are attacking against to find space away from both defenders to shoot. Also, this is good advice for a 1v3 where you are attacking three defenders. The overarching goal is to have a more favorable advantage that a 1v1 provides over a 2v1. Aim only to take on one defender to find the space for you to take a shot if you have no one on your team supporting you. Conversely, pick your head up to see if you have any support that may make your situation a little bit more favorable.
As you can see in the image, making the 1v2 a 1v1 will make it easier for you to succeed. Sure their are instances where the defenders are super far apart and you should aim to travel between them. However, it is often much easier to go a bit wider and shoot from the side.
Avoid attempting to take both of them head on. It is not heroic to beat both of them and then to score. Instead, make it a 1v1 to increase your chance of scoring.
Avoid calling a 1v2 football the same thing as a 2 v 1 or 2v1 soccer matchup.
Avoid being selfish here if it makes more sense to hold the ball and pass it. If you are not that comfortable with your skills and are going against the two best defenders on the other team, you may be better holding the ball and looking for a pass.
Start inside of the 18-yard-box. Grab two teammates and practice on getting from one side of the
18-yard-box to the other while two of you defend and one of you attacks. Preferably, you grab two defenders so you can work on attacking the entire time. Each time you make it across, you get a point. Each time the defender pokes the ball a way, neither side gets a point. Any time that the defenders dispossess you, they get a point.
The pro-tip for the 2 v 1 attacking soccer drills is that your ability to use foot skills versus your ability to shoot will determine how close you should aim to be to the net in the 1v2 before shooting. If you are a good shooter, then definitely only try to beat the first defender to find the space to shoot. However, if you see yourself much better with your foot skills, then consider taking on the second. However, a good attacker will only beat a defender one time in a run. Changing speed and exploding after a skill ensures you do not have to waste time and energy to travel past a defender you have already beat. Furthermore, attempting to beat a defender twice increases your chances of failure. Therefore, make sure to be explosive after any dribbling and accelerate away from each defender as you beat them with your foot skills.
