This video links two beloved Chicago traditions: First is the Allstate CTA Holiday Train (we call it the ‘Christmas train’). We rode this festively decorated ‘L’ train on the Red Line from Howard Street to State & Lake.
Second: Holiday shopping at Marshall Field’s … well, sort of! Chicagoans who bemoaned the conversion of Field’s to Macy’s back in 2006 were surprised and delighted when word circulated that the theme of the 2025 Christmas decorations at Macy’s on State was Marshall Field’s! The decorations, especially those within the historic restaurant on the 7th floor rechristened “The Marshall Field’s Walnut Room,” were unparalleled. Frango mints and nostalgic Field’s-branded items were flying off the shelves.
The flagship store hasn’t looked this fine in a long time. Even customer service got a boost. It turns out that Macy’s current CEO, unlike his predecessors, seems to understand that Chicago shoppers want their Marshall Field’s back (we’re keeping our fingers crossed)!
