Drone flyover | Boukoul a Village near Roermond, Netherlands

The history of Boukoul dates back to 1463 when written records mention the land called "opter Buyeckulen." Over time, the name of the village was written in various ways, such as "Boeckholt" in 1780. Initially part of the parish of Asselt, Boukoul gained its own parish church in 1935.

Until 2007, Boukoul was part of the Swalmen municipality. In 2007, Swalmen merged with Roermond, causing Boukoul to become part of Roermond. Following the merger, there was some growth in the village's development. In 2006, Boukoul had 970 inhabitants and around 400 houses. According to CBS, the population decreased to 935 in 2016 but increased again to 980 in 2020.

Boukoul is rich in forests and natural beauty. It features several historic monumental buildings, including a castle, country houses, and farmsteads, as well as remnants of a Roman road. To the north lies the Bisschopskamp estate.

The village is situated on the middle terrace of the Maas River, at an elevation of about 25 meters. An old Maas riverbed runs northward, containing springs and streams like the Eppenbeek, along with several marshy areas mainly to the south of Boukoul: Carthuisersbos, De Haak, Vlinkenbroek, Spiekerboek, and Haambroek. The elevation of these areas is approximately 23 meters, while slightly higher areas reach 28 meters and are covered in pine forests like Boeshei. Moving eastward towards the German border, new nature is being developed in the Blankwater area. The German border coincides with the steep slope to the higher terrace, where the Elmpter Wald stretches on the German side, with heights reaching over 60 meters.
