FOOTSWAPS FOR BEGINNERS 👟

Coach Josh (@hadley_joshua) shows us five different footswaps!
➡️ THE HOP
It's easy, it's quick! It's the favourite of the beginner! The downside of the hop is that it isn't very precise so you won't always land your foot where you want. You might even miss those smaller footholds. It also requires good handholds which won't always be available as you progress through the grades.
➡️ THE TABLE CLOTH (a.k.a. The Ballerina, The Magic Carpet)
The table cloth is definitely more precise than the hop! Great for those really tiny holds where your foot is taking up all the hold. This footswap can be helpful on slab and vertical terrain, but less helpful on overhang as it’s harder to maintain body tension, meaning your foot may slip. This footswap can also be tricky if the foothold is blocked and you can’t fit your other foot on top - but this is more common when climbing outside.
➡️ THE TWIST & THE ROLL
These are two different footswaps but in reality, you’ll probably end up doing some combination of the two. These footswaps are great on overhangs as they allow you to keep that body tension. They’re also very precise. The roll or a twisty-roll can be employed on any terrain, whilst the twist by itself can be a little harder on vert and slab, as well as on very small footholds.
➡️THE SMEAR
The smear is the ultimate volume/slab footswap. It’s useful for tiny footholds because you’re not trying to squeeze two feet on the hold. The downside is that you really need to trust your feet. Plus, this footswap requires either good hands (so you can smear on the wall or a very slopey volume) or a flatter volume, or slab where you can properly stand on your feet and drop the heels.
