Parallel documentary films created by renowned journalist Neal E. Robbins focus on Taiwan, with one exploring Taiwan identity and society and the other on the impending threat of war with China. By incorporating the perspectives of ordinary citizens—including educators, academics, creative professionals, and artists -- the films deliver lively multiple perspectives.
Robbins, who brings over 50 years of experience with Taiwan, first learned Mandarin on the island in the 1970s and later taught journalism to Taiwanese students in the 1990s. In 2023 and 2024, he returned to Taiwan, spending six months traveling across the island, interviewing locals, and observing the daily lives of its residents.
The films were produced by TaiwanPlus, Cambridge TV and Local Secrets. Executive Producer Eric Yang of TaiwanPlus commented, "The journalistic expertise and depth of experience that Robbins brings to this project are unparalleled. TaiwanPlus is honored to present this ambitious documentary, which offers a comprehensive view of the diverse perspectives and lifestyles on this island." It was first aired on TaiwanPlus in 4 episodes as Taiwan Undaunted. It has been re-edited into two stand-alone documentaries that can serve as a series.

Taiwan: on the brink of war (58 minutes) explores the threat of war with China, explaining how the conflict has already gotten underway as China directs grey-zone conflict, disinformation and other measures at Taiwan, causing political polarization there. It delves China’s demands to unify Taiwan with what it calls the Chinese Motherland, and how this is part of a larger project including Hong Kong. The film finds China’s harsh control of Hong Kong’s has rebounded on Taiwan, whose fate hinges on Beijing’s choices and the state of the US-China rivalry. But Taiwan is taking its future in its own hands, and, even if it may be wanting in military readiness, Taiwan is growing stronger. Many civilians are also girding themselves for war, having learned lessons from Ukraine’s clash with Russia.
