The PORTUGUESE influence on RHODE ISLAND (Fox Point & East Providence)

Portuguese immigration to Rhode Island, particularly in the areas of Providence, Fox Point, and East Providence, has a rich history that began in the late 19th century. The initial wave of immigrants primarily came from the Azores, Madeira, and mainland Portugal, driven by economic hardships and the lure of opportunities in the United States. Rhode Island, with its burgeoning industrial sector, offered ample employment opportunities, especially in textile mills, factories, and fishing industries.

Fox Point, a neighborhood in Providence, is particularly notable for its historical significance to the Portuguese community. The annual Holy Ghost Feast, a traditional Azorean festival, is a highlight in East Providence, drawing large crowds and celebrating Portuguese heritage with parades, music, and food.
