Leading with Legacy: Learnings from PATH’s ECD Programming through Primary Health Care

This video records the PATH-hosted “Promoting Early Childhood Development at Scale through Primary Health Care: Models, Programming Materials, and Lessons Learned” event on September 20, 2024.

We celebrated our decade-plus journey of working with governmental and nongovernmental partners in Kenya, Mozambique, and Ethiopia to expand the scope of primary health care (PHC) to promote more comprehensive early childhood development (ECD). We achieved this by designing, testing, and scaling up developmental monitoring and developmental counseling that can be feasibly delivered in low-resource health facilities and community health systems.

We also had interactive sessions to learn more about:

• The use of human-centered design to improve quality of service delivery and increase uptake of key practices by caregivers of young children.

• Provision of maternal mental health screening and counseling through PHC and peer group–based approaches for women at elevated risk of perinatal depression.
• Enhanced community-based rehabilitation for young children with disabilities that integrates strengthened referrals and parenting support for caregivers.

Together, we also launched an online ECD knowledge hub that will feature a constellation of training materials, job aids, policies and guidelines, and original briefs.

These milestones were possible thanks to the generous funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation over the past 12-plus years. The Hilton Foundation’s investments also catalyzed new ECD funding through PHC from the United States Agency for International Development, the Bainum Family Foundation, the van Leer Foundation, Big Win Philanthropy, the Jacobs Foundation, UNICEF, and the World Food Programme.
